Matt Farah at TheSmokingTire.com recently took a 2010 Touareg TDI® clean diesel to El Mirage Dry Lakebed in the Mojave Desert to put it through its paces. The landscape in the video may look familiar, as El Mirage Lake is a popular filming location for music videos and TV shows. However Matt and his team didn’t have either of those things in mind. He wanted to see what the 2010 Touareg TDI was all about, and El Mirage was one of the few places that could provide them with an almost-never-ending driving track. At one point, Matt coolly takes the Touareg up to 128 mph, all the while describing how the car is performing. It’s the kind of video that is as informative as it is fun, considering most drivers never get an opportunity like this. Video after the jump!

We falsely blame the Europeans for “holding back” their diesel technology when it has always been the environmental nutjobs that have prevented the US from enjoying excellent mileage from a wide range of vehicles. >60% of all vehicles sold in Europe are diesels. Rise up America, give VW a sign that will encourage them to offer their other models with TDI power and economy. The Eos, Passat to name a couple.

Americans are too busy driving large, gas sucking vehicles such as SUV’s Pickpus and Crossovers..it’s gross comsumerism at it’s worst.
Better still we are expected to jump up an down when “American” car makers produce a vehicle that gets 30 MPG HWY?
Lets get real here.
We need more vehicles that utilize “Clean Diesel” technology.
The only time consumers ever glace or consider a diesel is when fuel prices skyrocket.
My old 2002 VW Jetta TDI got 50+ MPG on the HWY, 45 city. I just bought a 2010 Jetta TDI and it’s getting 40 MPG right out of the box!
But go ahead…keep driving your 30 MPG
“American” car.
The Europeans can’t sell as easily their diesel products here as Americans still don’t “get it”.

The controls are worse than that… Chrysler corporation builds an entire line of diesel powered vehicles that it sells in Europe that it is not allowed to market in the US! This is a guise to hide the huge oil company profits in gasoline production.
